Welcome

Welcome to Life Care ConsultantsNewsletter for May.

This month we’re looking at fatigue and the the impact it has on your health, what to look out for and how we can help. We have also included a video – “A lively discussion on health” a must watch for all Health & Safety Professionals.

For us, first aid education and employee wellness isn’t about compliance and box ticking. It’s about empowering people through education and empathy to live their best lives. So, while we may be the largest private provider of these services in New Zealand, there’s one thing that never changes: our deeply caring approach that builds trust and understanding.

What is fatigue and why does it matter?

Fatigue is the state of feeling very tired, weary, or sleepy because of insufficient sleep, prolonged mental or physical work, or extended periods of stress or anxiety. Boring or repetitive tasks can intensify feelings of fatigue.

Fatigue affects a person’s health, increases the chance of workplace injuries occurring, and reduces performance and productivity within the workplace.

How can we help?

We use fatigue screening to assess an individual’s usual, recent level of sleepiness during daily life; and acute, chronic, and persistent work-related fatigue.

Life Care has adopted three fatigue questionnaires; the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and the Occupational Fatigue Exhaustion Recovery Scale (OFER); collectively, the results allow an evaluation of current fatigue risk within the company and, where appropriate, a review of fatigue risk management practices.
